Distinctive Unit Insignia

Description
A gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of a crimson square one point up bearing a gold colored lock with a black keyhole with two chains connected to the hasp and interlaced with two lightning flashes all gold, all above a gold scroll inscribed JE MAINTIENDRAI in black letters.

Symbolism
The square alludes to coordination of efforts and to worldwide service, the lightning implying instant readiness and fast response whenever required.  The lock symbolizes responsibility and control and the four links refer to command, administrative, technical and operational supervision.  The motto translates to I Shall Maintain and was suggested by the predecessor organization.

Background
The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the 169th Ordnance Battalion on 1 June 1966.  It was redesignated for the 169th Maintenance Battalion and amended to change the symbolism on 6 February 1967.  The insignia was amended to correct the symbolism on 27 November 1968.
